Last prune before frost

One last tidy for what wind can lever, then stop: subshrubs lightly, heleniums deadheaded, evergreen hedges closed six weeks before your first frost.

Lavender last prune before frost — light shear only, never into old wood

Lavender and rosemary

Shear once after flowering to keep a compact mound. Never cut into bare wood: it carries no buds. Where frost comes early, skip the shear — new soft growth scorches.

Heleniums and late daisies

Deadhead heleniums to keep them flowering into autumn. Stop when frost is close: save the energy for the crown.

Hedges and the weather rule

Evergreens close six weeks before your first frost. Cut only on a dry, frost-free day so fresh wounds callus instead of dying back.
